Coldest Morning... So far

Okay, *today* was the coldest morning so far. We dropped down to 6 above and warmed up to the mid 20's. Looking forward to more cold weather this weekend and next week.

Very Cold and 2-hour Delay

Another cold January day today. We started out with a 2-hour delay for school this morning. Apparently the snow was a bit heavier this morning across the southern sections of the county. We only had a light coating here. The wind was strong though with gusts up to 30mph this morning. We started out with a high of 28 at about 2am and then began to tumble after the cold front came through. By 8am we were down to about 15 degrees which is where we spent the day!

Like I said yesterday, I'm not making anymore predictions but the forecasters are calling for "at least" 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow night and again Thursday night. This according to Angela Buchman on WISH-TV 8 out of Indianapolis. If the snow continues to fall at 8am that should be enough to close school. That's all I want. :-)

No More Predictions

The temperatures warmed up today to the mid and upper 20's today. We didn't get as cold as I had hoped last night. I said the temperature would drop down to 5 degrees last night, but it never got below 9. In fact, the temperatures warmed up over night and was 14 by 7am this morning. So, I'm not making anymore predictions. I'll just repeat what I'm hearing and hope for the best.

On that note, a southern storm is brewing for Thursday and Friday and will bring at least 3 inches of snow somewhere in the Ohio or TN valley's. The models had the snow across TN earlier today, but now the northern band of the snow is forecast to reach the Ohio river. Maybe it will continue its northward trend.

An interesting event occurred Sunday in Wisconsin. A TV news live truck was doing a story on the dangers of thin ice Sunday. The driver of the truck turned down what she thought was a road, but it actually was a frozen canal. The weight of the truck was too much for the ice and it fell in.

Baby It's Cold Outside

Frigid temperatures have finally arrived. The afternoon high was only 12 above today. Quite cold. The wind has been gusty too with wind chills as low as -5. There have been a few flurries and snow showers today, but nothing of any significance. I anticipate the low dropping down to 5 above overnight. If it makes it that low, it will be the coldest night so far. The coldest night so far this season was just a few days ago when the low dropped to 10 above.

I'm going to make a prediction that we will reach 10 below zero before my birthday.

Cloudy with flurries

Today was a transition day I guess. Cloudy and mild with some gusty winds. Nothing too serious though. The high came very early in the morning and we've been slowly sinking in the temperature department all day. A few flurries blew in by mid afternoon. Tomorrow should be cold. Some forecasters are predicting a high of 18 or so with maybe an inch or two even of snow! The winds will be blowing across the lake causing some lake effect snow. Hopefully we can get under a good constant band. With the temperatures forecast to be below freezing for the next week, any snow we get should stick around. What we have now is getting very slushy.

Coldest Morning... So far

A nice day today. There was a lot of sunshine and mild temperatures after a very cold start to the morning. At 1:30am the temperature had dropped to 10 degrees above zero. This was the coldest temperature so far this winter season. Previously, the coldest temperature was 12 above back in early December. I think it was December... I'll have to look. Anyway, after the cold start we quickly warmed into the low 40's with a high of 42 degrees. We still have snow on the ground, except for those hillsides that face the south. I have a cool visible satellite image to post that shows the snow cover across the Midwest, but I'll have to add that later.

Sunny January Day

The day started off a bit cloudy and very cold with some gusty winds and a few flurries, but turned out to be a very sunny day. Overnight, we had another dusting of snow. I didn't measure it, but I'd say we had about a half inch of snow. It was hard to tell though because the wind was blowing it around pretty well. There were a few flurries off an on through the morning, but nothing else.

The wind this afternoon was very cold. Currently, the temperature out is 17 and the winds have subsided. Skies are also clear so I think we're headed for the low teens. The sunset this evening was absolutely beautiful. I wish I had taken a picture.

Snowy Morning

The clipper system that came through last night left about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of snow on the ground by 7am this morning. It was enough to cause slick roads, but apparently not enough to warrant a 2-hour delay. :-(
Yet another system is coming through tonight and is forecast to leave the same amount of snow on the ground. I don't look for anything different on tonight's system.

Will It Snow?

Today started off cloudy, but became quite nice in the mid to late afternoon. However, high thin clouds began surging in around 5pm ahead of the next disturbance. Snow is heading our way out of central Illinois this evening. Forecasters are predicting an inch or less. One forecaster from Cincinnati stated in his blog that 1-2 inches may be possible in some locations. We'll see.

Cloudy Day

Just a cloudy day. There were a few flurries in the afternoon, but nothing of any significance. The temperature never dropped below freezing this morning, so the threat of freezing drizzle did not develop. On to the next storm.

Snowy Day 4

The freezing rain really never developed. We had a short period of freezing drizzle around noon, but it warmed up at the surface enough that it didn't continue. Tonight, temperatures are hovering around 32 and fog is developing along with mist and drizzle. The light fluffy snow of this morning is now wet and heavy.

Another chance for freezing drizzle tonight into Monday morning.

From the NWS in Indianapolis...

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT EST /11 PM
CST/ TONIGHT TO 11 AM EST /10 AM CST/ MONDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN INDIANAPOLIS HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT EST /11 PM
CST/ TONIGHT TO 11 AM EST /10 AM CST/ MONDAY.

DRIZZLE THAT IS CURRENTLY FALLING ACROSS CENTRAL INDIANA WILL
CONTINUE INTO TONIGHT. TEMPERATURES AT THE SURFACE HAVE WARMED TO
A FEW DEGREES ABOVE FREEZING THIS AFTERNOON. BY MIDNIGHT...COLDER
AIR WILL BEGIN TO PUSH INTO CENTRAL INDIANA FROM THE NORTH.
DRIZZLE WILL BEGIN TO FREEZE ONTO EXPOSED SURFACES...INCLUDING
UNTREATED ROADWAYS. ELEVATED SURFACES LIKE BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES
WILL ESPECIALLY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE FREEZING DRIZZLE.

TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO THE UPPER 20S TOWARDS DAYBREAK MONDAY.
THIS WILL CREATE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TRAVELING CONDITIONS FOR
THE MORNING RUSH HOUR. FREEZING DRIZZLE IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO
MID-MORNING MONDAY BEFORE COMING TO AN END.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR
FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.

Snowy Day 3 "Accumulation Totals"

As expected, 4 inches of snow fell here at the house. It is a very light and fluffy snow. When I shoveled the sidewalk, the cement was dry under the snow. Here are a few pictures.

Snowy Day 2

I hear the plow operators on the scanner. :-( The snow has stopped now. I looked at radar and there isn't anything significant heading this way. Hopefully the freezing drizzle will make it here. Total snow accumulations look to be about 4 inches. I haven't been outside though, so I'll have the official amount later.

A winter storm warning was issued for Hamilton, Ripley, and Dearborn counties to our south. Apparently that is for freezing rain and drizzle. The rest of the area is still under a Snow Advisory or Winter Weather Advisory until noon for the Indy NWS and 6pm for Wilmington.

Snowy Morning

Well, the snow did arrive. The temperature at the moment is 25, so the snow is very light and fluffy. It's coming down pretty good too. So far, we have about two inches on the ground. I expect we'll get another inch or two at least. A warm layer of air is supposed to move in overhead turning the snow into freezing rain later this afternoon. We'll see if that happens. Hopefully, freezing drizzle will fall overnight leaving the roads a mess for Monday morning. :-)

Anticipating First Snow of Season

The first "significant" snow of the season may be headed our way in just a few hours. At this time, the forecast calls for 1-3 inches or 2-4 inches depending on who you listen to. The NWS out of Indianapolis has posted a Snow Advisory (blue areas of map) for it's entire area. The NWS in Wilmington has posted a Winter Weather Advisory (salmon area of map) for it's area.

Channel 13's Jude Redfield is predicting 1-3 inches for the city with lower amounts to the south. Channel 8's Sean Ash is forecasting 2-4 inches across the entire area. In Cincinnati, Channel 5 is predicting 1" in the city and along the river, with 2 inches across Franklin county in Indiana, and Butler county in Ohio. Further north, they are predicting 2-4 inches around Indianapolis and Dayton, Ohio. I guess we'll just have to wait and see who's correct. I'm betting on Sean Ash's forecast.

Today has been a beautiful day. Skies have been clear, but the temperatures have been cool. The humidity has been low too. Hopefully, the atmosphere will moisten up before the snow arrives so that we don't have to waist the precipitation on raising moisture levels near the ground.

Sunny Day

Today was a nice day, but windy. I heard the alarm on my weather station go off several times indicating a wind speed of 30mph or higher. I think the highest wind gust though was 31mph at 1:30pm today. Temperatures were cool with highs in the mid 30's. Those temperatures plus the wind made for a very January like day.

Waiting on the snow for Sunday. Some forecasters are indicating that the storm is heading farther north than originally predicted. This means that by the afternoon some warmer air may be brought into the southern edge of the system giving sleet and freezing rain in the Cincinnati area. I think it will be all snow here though. I'm looking for at least 3 inches in our area. I just wish it would begin in the late afternoon and not the early morning.

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Cloudy Day

Another typical January day today. Clouds have been thick through the day today, but no precipitation has fallen from the clouds yet. A few flurries are in the forecast for tonight, but anything that does occur will be a dusting at most.

A new storm is taking aim on Texts, Oklahoma, and Missouri this week. This storm is forecast to move northeastward and give us our first chance of some light snow Sunday. Some of the blogs I read are calling for the potential of 2-4 inches. At this time, the snow is forecast to begin Sunday morning into late afternoon. The possibility of the storm slowing down does exist which would mean the snow arrives later too.

Sunny Day

Today started off cold with temperatures in the mid-teens locally, but warmed slowly to a high of 32. Skies were partly sunny though so that made for an enjoyable day.

Forecasters are beginning to talk about our next possibility of snow Sunday night into Monday morning. Not many are talking numbers yet, but the are suggesting a possibility of 2-4 inches. I'm not going to hold my breath this winter though.

Dallas/Fort Worth had a mess this morning. Up to 1 inch of snow fell this morning causing numerous traffic accidents and flight delays. It seems ridiculous for an inch of snow to cause such chaos, but I guess if you don't have the amount of equipment to quickly treat roadways there are bound to be problems.

Snow Flurries

Interstate 65 South of Louisville, KY is closed due to a massive train derailment and fire. Several of the cars contain liquid propane. The smoke is now rising about 6,000 feet which is effecting Louisville Int'l Airport traffic. The accident occurred around 8:45am EST but because NW winds were blowing the smoke over the interstate, it remains closed at this time.

On to todays weather. It certainly feels like January now. Winds have been brisk out of the NW today with flurries and snow showers this morning. The flurries amounted to maybe a .25". All surfaces were covered, but was being blown around on the road by the winds.

Rain

The latest storm is over. The total rainfall since Thursday, January 11 has been 2.94". Here are the daily rainfall totals.
Thu 1/11 : 0.02"
Fri 1/12 : 0.44"
Sat 1/13 : 0.95"
Sun 1/14: 0.75"
Mon 1/15 : 0.73"

To the west in Missouri all of the rain froze. A major ice storm has been pounding the area since Thursday. Hundreds of thousands of homes are without power where up to two inches of ice accumulated on power lines, trees, and roads.

Snow Buffalo

An interesting photo I thought. This is called a "snow buffalo." Actually it's an SUV that is buried under 58 inches of snow. That's the total that fell at the Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico with a New Year's Eve storm that hit the area.

Heavy Rain

Some heavy rain has been falling, but nothing too serious yet. The ground is 100% saturated. Everywhere you look there's standing water. More rain is on the way as another low works its way up the stationary front and into the area.

Friday, January 12, 2007

Heavy Rain

The latest rain storm has begun. We didn't have much rain during the day, just enough to keep things wet or damp. This evening though, the rain is coming down heavy. We've received .30" of rain in the last hour! Hope it keeps up.

Ice storm warnings are posted for Illinois and stretching back into Missouri and Oklahoma. Up to a half inch of ice is expected there.

From the NWS in St. Louis....AN ICE STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT SUNDAY NIGHT.
TEMPERATURES WILL DROP BELOW FREEZING THIS EVENING WHICH WILL
CAUSE RAIN TO TRANSITION OVER TO FREEZING RAIN. A SERIES OF STORM
SYSTEMS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION OVER THE WEEKEND...CAUSING
PERIODS OF FREEZING RAIN. THE FREEZING RAIN MAY MIX WITH SLEET AT
TIMES. SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS UP TO ONE INCH CAN BE
EXPECTED. WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES ARE LIKELY

Normal Day

Another boring day weather wise. A cold morning and cool afternoon. Possible flooding rains this weekend.

Winds of Change?

The Alberta Clipper was a bust. Not a flake in sight. I really didn't expect much anyway. The winds were very gusty today and cold. It actually felt like January. Hopefully, these are the winds of change and even though we are to warm back up into the 50's this week maybe we'll get some snow soon.

First Week of January

The weather has been incredibly warm for the first week of January. It's been quite wet too. The most uncharacteristic feature however, has been the warmth. Already some trees are beginning to bud while the daffodils and peonys are popping their heads out of the ground. We may see our first light snowfall tonight when an Alberta Clipper is heading down and is expected to drop up to an inch of snow.
