July Summary

Not a lot to say about the month of July. It's been warm and humid, one might even say hot, but it is July afterall. We didn't hit 90 the entire month. I think that can be attributed to rainfall. The moist ground adds to the humidity in the air which in turn makes it more difficult for the sun to heat the air. Last summer we were in the middle of a fairly severe drought and the ground was bone dry. That's why we had several 90+ degree days in 2007.

I was hoping that the remnants of hurricane Dolly would give us a couple of inches of rain over the last two days, but the storms quickly fizzled as they headed across the Illinois-Indiana border. When the second wave came through later in the evening, the rain went just to our south. So... the monthly rain total for July topped out at 4.33 inches. That was just 0.03" below normal. I'm thinking August will be very similar to July. We'll wait and see.

Long Overdue Post

I've been very lazy when it comes to posting on my blog. It's time to get back in the saddle and posting again.

There really hasn't been any significant weather events affecting me locally since April, but there have been some in other parts of the state. The most interesting took place on June 7 when over 11 inches of rain fell on and near Columbus, Indiana. You can read about the event and watch video of the event at this address: http://www.theindychannel.com/news/16542019/detail.html

The second big event was a tornado outbreak on June 3. The tornoado destroyed several homes and a historic covered bridge in Moscow. You can read more and watch video at this address: http://www.theindychannel.com/weather/16471239/detail.html

Overall, the summer of 2008 has been the opposite of 2007. This summer, we have had plenty of rainfall and mild temperatures. The high temperature for the day has not yet reached 90 this summer. The humidity has been high though which makes it "feel" hotter than 90.

Before long, the weather will begin to cool. I heard a cicada today, so that means only 6 weeks till the first frost!
