30th Anniversary of Mount St. Helens Eruption

It was 30 years ago today that Mount St. Helens erupted. Located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest just 50 miles north of Portland, Oregon, the volcano stands at a hefty 8,365 feet (2,550 meters) above sea level. However, before the eruption on May 18, 1980 the volcano stood at 9,677 feet (2,950 meters) above sea level! The deadliest and most destructive volcanic event in US history, fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways, and 185 miles (298 km) of highway were destroyed.
